Georgina Letter: Christian Science

Dear Reader,

It is important to remember that this letter was written by Joel, the Christian Scientist.  It is presented here for historical purpose, as a teaching tool showing the lesson of Error and non-power of this world.  It is also very charming in its reverance to Mrs. Eddy and Christian Science.

Dear Friend:

Christian Science has been termed the Science of Christianity and is therefore the ministry of Love, a revelation of peace and the activity of the healing Christ.

The means of bringing these divine qualities to individual human experience is its Science or Principle.  Being scientific, Christian Science can only be correctly practiced through strict adherence to its rules or principles.

The Science of Christ, Truth, begins with the understanding of God as the only Cause.  Any deviation from this rule will cause delay or failure in demonstration.

Mary Baker Eddy, Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, has based her teaching on the revelation of the allness of God and, therefore, the nothingness of disease, sin and death.  Her Biblical authority is found in the statement, "All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made," and "God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good."

Christian Science, therefore, stands firmly on the Scriptural authority of the truth that God it the only Cause, and it necessarily follows that since all that He made is good, therefore there is no evil, and anything appearing to finite sense as error can exist only as illusion, a false sense of Reality.

In practical application to the problems of individual experience it often seems difficult to adhere strictly to this Principle.  Disease is often painful and seems very real.  Sin is ugly and our old theological beliefs would make sin the cause of disease and poverty.  In fact, some forms of mental therapy claim that hate, envy, jealousy, sensuality, etc., can cause erroneous states of health; can cause both mental and physical disease.

Mrs. Eddy has pointed to this claim of materia medica in her statement in the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, 411:20-21, "The procuring cause and foundation of all sickness is fear, ignorance, or sin." This belief of a cause other than God is likewise found in an ancient Bible statement to the effect that the sins of the fathers shall be visited in the children unto the third and fourth generations. That this, however, was but the concept to the writer and not a law of God is found in a later writing, Ezk. 18:2,3. "What mean ye....saying.  The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge?  As I shall not have occasion any more to use this proverb in Israel..."

It must be understood that inheritance is not a law, but a theological belief, and also that sin and fear are not cause, either of disease or death, but a materia medica belief built on human history and investigation rather than on the divine truth of being.

The careful study of Mrs. Eddy's writings reveals the true law with regard to God as the only Cause, and therefore good as the only effect.  This study will reveal the impossibility of evil resulting from the action of the human mind whether in the form of religious or medical belief or even from the evil thoughts of individuals or groups. In Science and Health, p. 151, we read: "The human mind has no power to kill or to cure, and it has no control over God's man." Also, p. 207, "There is but one primal cause.  therefore there can be no effect from any other cause, and there can be no reality in aught which does not proceed from this great and only  cause."  This gives the general idea on which we may build our treatment for our problems.  More specifically Mrs. Eddy writes (ibid) 415:1-3, "Immortal Mind is the only cause; therefore disease is neither a cause or nor an effect." Also, 419: 10-12, "Neither disease itself, sin, nor fear has the power to cause disease or a relapse."  And confirms these completely in Mis. Wr. 93:6, 21 "Can fear or sin bring back old beliefs of disease that have been healed by Christian Science?  Your answer is, that neither fear nor sin can bring on disease or bring back disease, since there is no reality in disease."

This establishes the basic premise of our Leader's great Revelation, i.e. that only God can be reckoned as cause and only good can be the effect. Along this line we may go one step further and realize that as God is good and the only Cause, all creation is necessarily the compete expression of that goodness.  Here it becomes clear that error in any form is not reality, was never created and therefore has no externalized existence and expresses only in the realm of unreality or illusion where it has neither cause nor effect, and can neither cause nor affect any activity or quality of eternal Life, which is the only life of every individual.

Only our Leader can adequately cover this entire subject and this she does in one paragraph which every Christian Scientist may well study with care where she writes in No and Yes, 10:27, "Eternal harmony, perpetuity, and perfection, constitute the phenomena of being, governed by the immutable and eternal laws of God; whereas matter and human will, intellect, desire, and fear, are not the creators, controllers, nor destroyers of life or its harmonies."

Sincerely yours,
